Commonwealth Games 2026: A Mixed Bag for Sports Fans!

Excitement is brewing for the *2026 Commonwealth Games, set to take place in *Glasgow from July 23 to August 2! However, not all sports enthusiasts are cheering, as the announcement of the stripped-back program has left some notable absences.

What’s In?
The confirmed lineup features 10 sports, including:

  • Athletics and para-athletics
  • Swimming and para-swimming
  • Track cycling and para-track cycling
  • Boxing
  • Gymnastics
  • Netball
  • Weightlifting
  • Judo
  • Bowls and para-bowls
  • 3×3 basketball and wheelchair basketball

What’s Out?
Regrettably, badminton and hockey are among the sports missing from the roster. Kirsty Gilmour, a veteran badminton player and two-time medalist, expressed her disappointment, particularly for younger athletes who are missing out on what could have been a pivotal moment in their careers. Similarly, the absence of hockey, a staple since 1988, has left fans and players disheartened.

Scottish Hockey’s CEO Derek Keir emphasized the disappointment, especially after the investment in a new national hockey center for the last Games. The decision, as explained by Ian Reid of Commonwealth Games Scotland, was driven by logistical challenges, including venue costs and athlete accommodations.

Looking Ahead
Despite the cuts, *Katie Sadleir, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, remains optimistic. She believes this is a chance to “reset and reframe” the Games. With an expected 3,000 athletes from up to *74 Commonwealth nations, the Games promise to be a grand showcase of talent and spirit, even without some beloved sports.

The 2014 Games were a massive success, and organizers are keen to create a memorable event in 2026 that brings the community together. With existing infrastructure and support, Glasgow is poised to host an unforgettable celebration of athleticism.

Are You Ready?
As the countdown begins, fans can look forward to 500,000 tickets being made available for this fantastic event, expected to bring an economic boost of £150 million to Glasgow. The excitement is palpable, and while we bid farewell to some sports this time around, there’s still much to celebrate!

Stay tuned for more updates as we gear up for a summer of spectacular athletic achievement! 🏅🎉
