Joker: Folie à Deux” Suffers Record Box Office Drop, Knocked Off by Indie Horror Hit

Joker: Folie à Deux has taken a dramatic plunge at the North American box office, dropping a staggering 80% from its debut weekend earnings of $40 million to just $7.1 million. This significant fall marks a record collapse for a comic-book movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The highly anticipated Joker sequel, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, was quickly dethroned by indie horror sensation Terrifier 3, which dominated the weekend box office with an impressive $18.2 million.

Adding to the blow, Joker: Folie à Deux also slipped behind the animated adventure The Wild Robot, which held onto second place with $13.4 million, pushing the once-topper into third.

In fourth place was Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which saw a slight dip from last weekend, earning $7 million. Critics have had mixed reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, describing it as “bleak and daring” but also “depressingly dull and plodding.”

Rounding out the top five was the comedy-drama Piece by Piece, an inventive film using Lego animation. Featuring an all-star voice cast that includes Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, Justin Timberlake, and Busta Rhymes, the film brought in strong numbers as it continues to charm audiences.

With a steep drop like this, it remains to be seen if Joker: Folie à Deux can recover in the weeks ahead.
