Tiwa Savage Opens Up About Age-Shaming Over Her Fashion Choices

Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage has spoken out about the constant criticism she faces over her fashion choices, particularly as a woman in her 40s.

In a candid conversation on a recent episode of the Receipts podcast, the 44-year-old singer and single mother expressed her frustration with being age-shamed for her outfits. Savage, known for her bold and stylish wardrobe, revealed that her decision to wear bikinis or revealing clothing often draws backlash from Nigerians, who criticize her for dressing “inappropriately for her age.”

“They age-shame me every single day,” Savage said. “They say, ‘A woman of your age, how can you be wearing a bikini?’ I can because I have a body.”

The Somebody’s Son hitmaker compared her experience to that of other global female stars, such as Beyoncé, who are often celebrated for their beauty and style well into their 40s. Savage highlighted the double standard, noting that while Beyoncé’s fans applaud her for looking incredible at her age, Nigerians tend to criticize her for similar choices.

“Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis, but Americans don’t age-shame her,” Savage explained. “They say, ‘For her age, black don’t crack.’ It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.”

She also addressed comments suggesting that her fashion choices might embarrass her son in the future. Savage dismissed these remarks, affirming her belief that her son would be proud of her confidence and accomplishments. “When my son grows up, he’s going to see this and think, ‘My mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.’”

Tiwa Savage’s remarks have sparked conversations about ageism and societal expectations, particularly for women in the public eye. As one of Africa’s most successful musicians, Savage continues to challenge norms, using her platform to advocate for confidence and self-expression, regardless of age.
